Learning and Working Together Tłı̨chǫ Gathering 2024

NEWS RELEASE - Behchokǫ̀, NT, March 5, 2024

The Tłı̨chǫ Government will launch the inaugural Learning and Working Together Tłı̨chǫ Gathering (Hoghàdets'eetǫ - Ełexè Eghàlats'eeda), March 12-14, 2024 at the Kǫ̀ Gocho Sportsplex Centre, and the Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School in Behchokǫ̀. The purpose of the Gathering is to connect Tłı̨chǫ citizens with a variety of employment options, including post-secondary and apprenticeship opportunities. The Gathering will focus on career and training matches for post-secondary students, individuals looking to make a career change, and those affected by the mine closures between 2024 and 2034.

All Gathering activities are grounded in Tłı̨chǫ culture, traditions, and wellness throughout the three-day event. Conference hours are 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. daily, with attendees invited to participate in or view live 3D printing, develop carpentry, culinary, and welding skills, or even build a dog  house.

The Gathering will include presentations by community and industry leaders, and the discussions and activities throughout the Gathering will be instrumental in creating a strategic path forward post-mine closure. Tłı̨chǫ traditional economy practitioners will be sharing their experiences in hunting, fishing, trapping, and beading. Many local businesses and craft vendors will also be participating.Attendees can begin their apprenticeship journey by writing the Trades Entrance Exam at the exam stations. Indigenous influencers will be hosting workshops, including:

  • fashion designer Scott Wabano
  • comedian Jenn Hayward
  • Magoo Crew, and
  • Community Elders will be sharing their life experiences.

The Gathering is funded in part by the Ministry of Employment and Social Development of Canada and is sponsored by Rio Tinto, De Beers, and Burgundy Diamond Mines. Members of the media are invited to attend the pre-event tour on Day 1 (March 12) at 1:30 p.m. Participants will see the Opening Fire & Drum Dance Ceremony and receive a guided tour of the facilities and workshops.
